The chat messaging platform of the world’s biggest social media network is truly on a roll. Facebook has recently revealed that its Messenger mobile app now regularly attracts 1.2 billion active users on a monthly basis. Some may remember that back in July of last year, the app had breached the 1 billionth monthly active user mark. It is also interesting to note that despite the fact that Messenger was able to gain some 200 million users in the last eight months (which would potentially lower down the average level of user engagement), the volume of its monthly active users has still improved.
It goes without saying that Messenger had a pretty good year. Sure, its growth has sort of started to maybe level off -- this time it took the app eight months to add another 200 million, while it went from 800 million to 1 billion users in just half a year back in 2016. Moreover, while it has managed to improve its daily iOS App Annie download ranking in the United States compared to last year’s, its spot has actually slid down since June of last year (when it recorded its best ranking ever). Sensor Tower has also reported that the global Android and iOS downloads of Facebook’s Messenger mobile app has increased 5.66 percent from 145.3 million during the first three months of last year to 153.5 million in the Q1 2017.
For so many users across the globe, Facebook’s Messenger app has evolved into something more than just a chat messaging platform. As pointed out by David Marcus, the head of Messenger, the app has become a useful tool for locating old friends who do not have an updated contact number. For some people, the app has even become their first choice communications tool, instead of the usual phone number.
So how did Messenger become the leading chat messaging platform in the world? Some diligence certainly helps, especially in integrating loads of new features. Take Messenger Day for instance -- some might say that it is not an original idea (probably inspired by Snapchat Stories), but Marcus has announced that the feature is doing fairly well among the younger generation of Facebook users. Messenger has also introduced a camera feature that allows users to add hilarious animated selfie masks and illustrated filters, and for good measure, also added support for split screen capabilities in group video chat conversations.
