In June earlier this year, Facebook officially launchedFacebook Moments, a mobile app that basically allows users to easily send or share pictures to their friends, especially those images that include their friends. But now, the Moments mobile app has added another functionality -- letting users automatically create music videos of the photos they shared, and even allowing people to customize and then share via Facebook.
Even though incorporating a video creation feature to Moments can only be considered a minor upgrade, it does make the mobile app infinitely cooler (because videos trump still images anytime, as most people would like to think). More importantly, it gives users another motivation to try out the Moments mobile app. When Facebook first launched the app, there were not that many users who were dying to try out the feature, but now that it comes with a video making tool, more people might just give the app a shot.
Here is how the video making functionality works -- Facebook’s Moments mobile app will automatically generate a music video for any grouping of six more more pictures. Users can then tap this video in the mobile app in order to start customizing it -- they can choose to remove some of the included pictures, and then pick from around a dozen different options for the background musical track. When they are done customizing the music video, they can share it with a single tap directly to Facebook, and then tag their friends, especially those whom the users are already sharing those pictures via Moments.
Interestingly, now that the Moments mobile app can now create videos, it now has to compete with other services that have video making capabilities, such as Flipagram or Google Photos (via its Assistant feature). The advantage for Moments is that it is a Facebook service, which means that the social media giant will surely push its own mobile app to its users.
Having the Moments mobile app do videos may also be strategic for Facebook. Video has become one of the fastest growing formats in the social media platform, with more than 4 billion views of videos on a daily basis. And more video views translates to more revenues for Facebook (through video advertising).
The Moments mobile app is another creation of Facebook’s Creative Labs initiative, the same one behind other apps such as Facebook Groups, Slingshot, Facebook Paper, Rooms, and Mentions, among many others. The social media giant is certainly hoping that Moments will become a hit. Per App Annie’s data, the mobile app is doing okay, managing to rank in the Photo & Video category on the iTunes App Store, and in the Photography category on Google Play.
The enhanced edition of Facebook’s Moments mobile app is now available on iTunes and on Google Play.
