Earlier this week, Google had revealed that it was starting the roll out of Android 7.1.2, the newest version of Android Nougat, to devices such as the Google Pixel and the Nexus 5X (built by LG) by way of an over the air update. Based on the most recent developer preview, owners of the Nexus 5X will be delighted to know that the device will now receive a new feature that was once only available to the Pixel, but often requested to be included in the Nexus 5X. Specifically, this feature allows users to swipe down on the device’s fingerprint reader to display notification alerts.
Almost three months ago, some Android mobile users had expressed their disappointment over the fact that the latest Nexus models are not getting the swipe for notifications functionality. The Pixel already makes full use of the same fingerprint scanner as the newest Nexus handsets, but by the time Android 7.1 was deployed, that particular swipe gesture was not included for the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P (built by Huawei).
To Google’s credit, the tech giant did address those concerns then, claiming that it was still in the process of properly evaluating the swipe gesture. But with the roll out of Android 7.1.2, the gesture is now included as one of the options belonging to Moves in Settings for Nexus 5X units. To be clear about it, the Nexus 6P is yet to receive the developer preview, but it is a sure bet that owners of this phablet will also be able to take full advantage of the swipe gesture pretty soon.
Android 7.1.2 was first deployed to the Pixel XL earlier this week, with the smaller Pixel smartphone, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P all lining up next (all of these three other devices are also part of the Android Developer Preview Program). It is very likely that the next over the air updates will be for the Pixel C tablet and the Nexus Player.
Technically speaking, Android 7.1.2 is more of a maintenance update that puts more attention to bringing further refinements, which means it does not only come with the usual fixes for bugs and optimizations, it also comes with a few minor improvements for mobile users and wireless carriers. Google is looking to release Android 7.1.2 officially in the next two months.
