FreedomPop, the United States based wireless carrier primarily known for offering free voice and data services, has launched new international features, including a new free global data hotspot that allows mobile users to enjoy free data in 25 locations around the world, plus a SIM card that will let customers have access to free voice calls and data on their devices across various countries. On top of all this, FreedomPop has also managed to raise $50 million in funding in its bid to expand its services beyond its homeland to international markets.
It should be noted though that the free global data hotspot deal actually costs $49.99 initially, but then offers free data to more than two dozen countries across the globe. Which countries exactly, some might ask. Well, these include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic. As for the SIM, the offer starts with one that covers most if not all of Europe. For just $10, mobile users can take full advantage of free voice calls and data across all European countries.
Half a year ago, FreedomPop was able to raise $30 million in funding, courtesy of investors that included processor giant Intel. That the wireless carrier was able to attract $50 million more is not much of a surprise, but this time however, FreedomPop has chosen not to divulge the identity of the investor. In all likelihood, this investor is a pretty capable financial player who prefers not to be announced yet on account of plans that will have FreedomPop integrated with another company that has expressed interest in buying the wireless carrier.
To date, FreedomPop has already raised more than a hundred million dollars in funding in total. The wireless carrier’s growth in the United States has been impressive, and it is surely looking now to expand its services in markets outside of America. FreedomPop is unique because it does not function as your typical mobile virtual network operator (FreedomPop uses Sprint’s network). It actually gives away bundles of voice calls and text messaging, and data, and then upsells on additional voice call minutes, voicemail, and data, among many other services.
Moreover, while other MVNOs purchase voice call minutes, text messages, and data in bulk from bigger wireless carriers for the purpose of reselling these services to customers, FreedomPop on the other hand acquires only data which it can use in offering the rest of its mobile services, e.g. voice as VoIP. As opposed to pre-acquiring services bulk style, it negotiates various usage tiers and then pays for what its customers actually only consume.
