Thorstein Heins is the chief executive officer of Powermat Technologies, a company that specializes in providing wireless charging solutions, and behind one of the key wireless charging standards. According to Heins, the wireless charging standard will come packed into any smartphone made by Samsung that possesses wireless charging capabilities.
One reason wireless charging has not been able to gain universal acceptance is the issue of compatibility. For instance, the wireless charging standard developed by Powermat Technologies may be adopted by the Power Matters Association (PMA), but it is at odds with charging pads that use Qi, a different standard being advocated by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).
Thankfully, Samsung has decided to include both the PMA and Qi standards for its Galaxy S6 devices. And as attested to by Heins, it appears that the South Korean company is planning to incorporate the PMA wireless charging standard (that is, Powermat's) in its future smartphone releases. And although the WPC is not as convinced as Heins is, the group does welcome the idea that Samsung is committed to utilizing wireless charging features moving forward, though not necessarily just PMA's standard, but whatever standard that works best for a particular smartphone model.
The last few years have seen smartphones mostly using the QI standard for wireless charging. As for Powermat Technologies, it focused on installing charging pads in popular establishments such as Starbucks and high-traffic venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden. It did not have much mileage in getting its PMA standard into smartphones, only managing to snag a few models here and there but nothing as high-profile as the Galaxy S6. That is why Powermat Technologies has much reason to celebrate Samsung's decision to incorporate the PMA standard in wireless charging in its flagship device.
It can also be considered a victory for the wireless charging industry in general. Sometimes the only thing a new technology needs to truly succeed is a visible bearer. With Samsung carrying its banner, wireless charging could finally become the standard for all mobile devices.
