Its fiercest rival has already done it, so Samsung might as well give it a shot. The South Korean phone maker’s upcoming flagship device for next year is the highly awaited Galaxy S8, and according to a report published by Korean news website The Investor, the device could feature a pressure sensitive display screen, the same way that Apple’s recent iPhone models have 3D Touch technology. The Investor’s report states that the pressure sensitive technology may be adopted partially on the Galaxy S8, but in later future Galaxy S models, Samsung may be looking to fully embrace the feature.
Most of today’s touch screen smartphones only allow the simplest of interaction, the display responds to the mobile user’s touch, with support for the usual swipe and drag gestures. But with support for pressure sensitivity, the range of interaction is expanded exponentially. Specific functionalities could be set up depending on how strongly the user’s finger is pressing on the screen. A pressure sensitive touch screen not only will enrich a user’s experience in completing routine smartphone tasks, but could also lead to more fun and dynamic interaction with mobile apps and games.
The Investor report alluded to partial adoption only for the Galaxy S8, and it is not exactly made clear just what that includes. Still, this would be exciting news for Samsung and Android fans. Some may remember that a year ago, there was some speculation that the Galaxy S7 would come with a pressure sensitive display screen. Obviously, that did not happen, but there is a good chance that next year’s Galaxy S8 could start adopting this feature.
Apart from the pressure sensitivity feature, there are other rumors out there connected to the Galaxy S8. Barely a week ago, it was reported that Samsung will be incorporating an artificial intelligence (AI) digital assistant to the Galaxy S8, one that would rival Apple’s Siri. It is said that the Galaxy S8’s voice activated digital assistant will be developed by Viv Labs, the startup firm that Samsung had acquired about a month ago.
Then in October earlier this year, it was rumored that the Galaxy S8 will come with a 4K display screen. Other rumors include the absence of a physical home button, a design that puts a display screen on the whole front side, a 10 nanometer chip set, and an Ultra HD screen. There is also talk that the Galaxy S8 will be debuting in February of next year during the 2017 Mobile World Congress event.
