Giphy, the popular search engine for GIFs, recently launched its own app called Giphy + Messenger. As its name implies, the app integrates directly with Facebook's Messenger app, allowing users to search and send GIFs through the social media giant's messaging tool.
The Giphy + Messenger app joins several other exclusive apps that will be featured in Messenger Platform, Facebook's expansion program for its Messenger tool, which has now been enhanced to allow third party apps to be integrated with it. Messenger Platform not only expands the range of products and services that can be accessed by users, it would also allow business entities to share more information to customers, such as ordering information and shipping information.
In Giphy's case, it is more of the fun variety as opposed to the business kind. It started out as just a website with a cool searchable database for GIFs, but now it has slowly and deliberately transitioned itself into the mobile world.
For instance, the company recently purchased Nutmeg, a messenger app for GIFs. Alex Chung, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Giphy, had stated during the time of the Nutmeg acquisition that the company is looking at developing its own mobile apps in the near future.
Also, Giphy is currently offering an application program interface (API) that allows for integration of messaging with GIFs. A few apps, like GroupMe, Kik and Slack, have already integrated with Giphy's API, which also features a Translate tool wherein users can just type a word and then translate that word into GIF form. This Giphy API initiative is indeed already bearing fruit.
The Giphy + Messenger app is certainly a product of that initiative. And the great thing about it is that Giphy is building its app off of Facebook's platform, which means that the app is more seamlessly incorporated into the Facebook Messenger's fabric.
Thus, users who download the Giphy + Messenger app can easily browse through Giphy's entire GIF database, select a particular GIF, and send that GIF to friends and contacts directly via Facebook Messenger with just a single tap. For good measure, Messenger Platform provides attribution to all apps that are integrated into it -- for instance, in Giphy's case, all GIFs shared on the Messenger will feature a Giphy logo.
For now, the Giphy + Messenger app is exclusive to Facebook Messenger only. But Chung is quick to note that Giphy is targeting to create more Giphy apps that can be integrated with other platforms too. The recent purchase of Nutmeg certainly suggests that Giphy might possibly be integrating with iMessage too in the near future.
