Google is launching its own online store, particularly one that focuses on selling Google-branded devices such as Nexus smartphones and tablets, Chromebook laptops, and Chromecast streaming devices, just to name a few.
The online store will go by the name of Google Store, and aside from selling its branded devices, it will also offer Nest, a Web-connected thermostat that Google acquired in 2014.
This should be considered by many as a sensible move for Google. The company already sells its software products via the Google Play Store, which offers mobile apps, music, and even movies. The Google Store will serve as an entirely separate venue wherein Google can showcase its hardware offerings.
Interestingly, Google appears to take a page out of Apple's book by following its competitor's approach to selling its wares. Apple has always been keen on maintaining separate stores for its software (apps, music, movies) via the App Store and iTunes music store. As for its devices like iPhone, iPads, and Mac computers, Apple sells them separately through the Apple online store. Other companies, like Amazon for instance, just sells everything in one place.
Mimicry or not, maintaining a dedicated store for its products makes a lot of sense for Google because it really does need it. And it is not like the company has not done it before. Back in 2010, when Google unveiled its first Nexus device, it actually launched an online store so that people can buy the phone. The company later moved its Nexus phones to outside retailers and even began offering its hardware products via the Google Play store.
But now that the line of Google-branded devices has expanded, it is high time Google set up an online store specifically for the purpose of selling its phones, tablets, and other devices. Besides, having a dedicated store for its devices has the added advantage of allowing buyers or visitors to also get to know other similar devices as well as accessories like chargers and smartphone cases. Moreover, the launch of the Google Store goes along nicely with the release of the company's newest device, the second generation Chromebook Pixel laptop, which of course will also be made available in the new online store.
For a limited time only, Google is offering free shipping on any item purchased from the Google Store. As for those who recently bought devices from the Google Play Store, their order information will automatically be moved to the Google Store.
