Fresh from announcing more than a week ago that it was rolling out Google Lens to non-Pixel handsets, Google has now revealed (via a tweet) that it is now doing the same for the feature to iOS powered mobile devices. The tech giant is accomplishing this by deploying Google Lens by way of Google Photos on iOS, which means that owners of supported Apple devices should start to experience the feature in the next few weeks.
Of course, those iOS mobile users looking to try out Google Lens have to make sure that their Google Photos has been updated to version 3.15. And it needs to be mentioned that for now, Google Lens can only be utilized if the device language is configured to the English language.
Owners of Apple devices can start gaining access to Google Lens by simply launching the Google Photos mobile app from their iPhone or iPad tablet. Then from there, it is just a matter of choosing an image and tapping on the Google Lens icon. For those who must know, the icon is displayed as a sort of a square lens like graphic, and one can find it at the toolbar located at the bottom section of a photo. As soon as users tap on the Google Lens icon, it will get on to examining the image and then proceed to supplying the contextual information.
For users of Apple devices, they should note though that the Photos mobile app on iOS is not capable of providing contextual information about images stored in the Camera Roll. Apple Photos, however, allows people to search for exact words, persons, content, and even locations.
There is no doubt that Google Lens is an awesome feature. Its existence was first confirmed by Google back in May of last year, specifically during the tech giant’s annual I/O developers conference. Then about five months later, the Google Lens mobile app had began to be deployed. A little more than a month after, the feature arrived on the Pixel and the Pixel 2 flagship devices, via Google Assistant. Over a week ago, Google Lens was launched on non-Pixel Android powered mobile devices.
One of the coolest abilities of the Google Lens feature is its ability to detect a person’s name, a phone number, and even an address from a business card being photographed (using the smartphone’s camera), and then collate all those information in order to create a new contact. When a user captures an image of a landmark, a building, a restaurant, a painting, an animal, or a plant, Google Lens can pull up information related to those subjects. Even when taking a picture of a book cover, the feature can retrieve reviews and basic information (synopsis, pricing, availability, etc). Google Lens can even save details from a billboard or a flyer, and then incorporate the data into the user’s calendar.
