Google certainly took full advantage of its eagerly awaited media event to officially unveil new smartphone devices in a move that sees the tech giant significantly boost its track record when it comes to hardware. Indeed, the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are decidedly high end handset offerings that should give Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s premier Galaxy lineup a run for their money.
Coming in at 5 inches, the Pixel is the smaller of the two, sporting an AMOLED capacitive display screen with a resolution of 1,080 by 1,920 pixels (with a pixel density of 441 ppi). The screen is flanked with a 12 megapixel (f/2.0) camera on the rear side and an 8 megapixel selfie shooter (also f/2.0) on the front side.
Inside its sleek frame, the Pixel boasts a four core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip set paired with the Adreno 530 graphics processing unit and aided with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 32 gigabytes or 128 gigabytes of onboard storage. The device comes with a 2,770 mAh battery and is powered by Android 7.1 Nougat.
As for the bigger Pixel XL, it comes with a 5.5 inch AMOLED display screen (1,440 by 2,560 pixel resolution), complemented with a 12 megapixel camera on the rear side and an 8 megapixel camera on the front side. Like its smaller sibling, the device is fitted with a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, the Adreno 530 GPU, plus 4 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes or 128 gigabytes of built in memory. Its battery is at 3,450 mAh and it comes preinstalled with Android 7.1 Nougat.
Some reports already surfaced that Verizon Wireless will be the exclusive carrier for the new Pixel devices at launch, and will start selling the handsets on October 20th, accepting preorders until then. The Pixel starts at $650, while the Pixel XL starts at $770. The Big Red will also be offering a free Daydream virtual reality headset (which is normally priced at $80) to those who decide to preorder any of the Pixel devices. The devices are offered in three color options: quite black, very silver, and really blue. But alas -- news already broke out that the really blue colored option has already sold out.
Even this early, Google executives are already highlighting the might of the Pixel devices’ camera specs, especially after DxOMark (which rates mobile camera and dedicated cameras) awarded Google’s newest smartphones a score of 89, which is said to be the best rating ever granted to a smartphone camera. Also, much buzz has been generated with the Pixel devices’ ability to give its users unlimited cloud storage for mobile photos and video content. Plus, the handsets also come preinstalled with a live customer care mobile app.
