Google has just deployed the fifth and most likely the final developer preview of Android 7.0 Nougat, the most recent version of its Android mobile operating system. According to Google, this newest preview should provide developers near final system updates for all the supported preview handsets. As for the final version of the OS, it is scheduled for wide release later this summer season.
As explained by Google by way of its Android Developer blog, this latest developer preview of Android Nougat will come with the newest version of the OS’ emulator in order to conduct apps final testing, the final N application program interfaces (APIs), the newest system behaviors and user interface, and the newest patches for bugs and optimizations across the mobile platform and preloaded mobile apps. There appears to be no brand new user facing functionalities in this roll out. But it bears noting that Google has sometimes deployed minor tweaks here and there to the user interface between developer preview releases.
To be clear about it, the Android Nougat Developer Preview is now made available to handsets such as the Nexus 6 (made by Motorola), the Nexus 5X (made by LG), and the Nexus 6P (made by Huawei), as well as the Nexus 9 and the Pixel C tablet devices, plus Android powered General Mobile 4G devices (through over the air updates and system images).
In order to get hold of the latest Android Nougat Developer Preview, it is readily available to those users who have enrolled in the Android Beta program. Thus, they will not need to do anything -- their handsets will automatically receive the Developer Preview 5 update. As for those who have not enrolled in the Android Beta program, they can still choose to head to android.com/beta and opt in their qualified Android powered smartphone or tablet device. They can also elect to download and manually flash this update.
To provide a bit of a background, the name Android 7.0 Nougat was selected by Google by way of a fan vote conducted through an online poll. Google has been naming versions of its Android mobile operating system after popular sweets, beginning with Android Cupcake back in 2009 about seven years ago. As for Android Nougat, the name became official in June earlier this year, and is the 12th version of the world’s most widely used mobile operating system. The previous versions were Android 1.5 Cupcake, Android 1.6 Donut, Android 2.0 Eclair, Android 2.2 Froyo, Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Android 4.4 KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop, and the current Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
