Google has officially announced that it is making its Project Fi mobile service available to all mobile users based in the United States as along as they currently have a Gmail account. Prior to this announcement, mobile users who wanted to avail of the tech giant’s wireless service had to ask, and then wait, for an invitation. Thankfully, Google has decided to get rid of the invite only system and open Project Fi to all qualified users.
But wait -- there are a few things that should be noted. First of all, those who want to sign up must be based in an area supported by Project Fi’s service. For those who are not sure whether their location is eligible, Google will give them some assistance in determining their eligibility when they sign up for the service. Secondly, as mentioned earlier, they must have an existing Gmail account. Also, they must either own or plan on buying a recent Nexus smartphone, specifically any of the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P (made by Huawei), or Nexus 5X devices. Last but not the least, applicants for the mobile service must be at least 18 years of age.
So how does one exactly go about in signing up for the Project Wi mobile service? They will need to head to Project Fi’s official sign up page. Applicants will be required to sign in using their Gmail accounts. After doing so, they can expect a series of prompts, which typically include providing a ZIP code, entering a valid address, selecting a new mobile phone number (or supplying legitimate credentials in order to port an already existing mobile phone number), and purchasing a Project Fi SIM card if they already own a Nexus smartphone.
What about those who do not have a Nexus device yet? Fortunately, Google is offering one of its Nexus devices -- the Nexus 5X -- with a discounted price but for a limited time only, and only to those signing up for Project Fi. The Nexus 5X (which was built by LG in collaboration with Google) is now being offered at $199 (the original price is $349), but this price is only good until April 7th of this year, while supplies last. Oh, and mobile users must also purchase the Nexus 5X directly from Google.
As for credit checks, they are only required for mobile users who decide to finance the handset they bought. With Project Fi, customers will not need to sign any annual contract. After signing up, the smartphone or SIM card should be delivered in the next few days. Users can expect to receive a welcome kit that already comes with instructions on how to activate the Project Fi mobile service.
