For the first time since debuting its Project Fi offering, Google is incorporating an unlimited data plan to its wireless service. With its new Bill Protection option, the tech giant will be capping charges for voice calls and text messaging, as well as data, at $80 every month, while letting customers enjoy high speed data, free of charge. The Bill Protection will also work for roaming customers, and for those who use data only SIM cards.
As explained by Marcia Jung, the manager of Project Fi, via Google’s official blog site, the introduction of the new Bill Protection plan will mean that customers will no longer have to worry about paying for unlimited data especially during months wherein they are not actually consuming that much gigabytes. Jung goes on to cite an example in which a person that uses up only 1.4 gigabytes of data in a given month will end up paying just $34 for that consumption, as opposed to paying the full $80 per month.
And while it is true that Project Fi will still have customers pay $10 each month for each gigabyte they use, these users do have the option of just paying $80 per month outright for unlimited data if they expect to be consuming over 6 gigabytes of data monthly. Jung further noted that for those who will be using up over 15 gigabytes of data in a given month, they are going to see their connection speeds slowed. However, those who wish to enjoy fast speeds can continue to pay for each gigabyte so that their speeds will not be slowed.
It was more than a couple of years ago when Google first unveiled its Project Fi wireless service. Upon its debut, the service automatically switch mobile users between Wi-Fi connections and T-Mobile’s or Sprint’s network. Over a year later, it has since addedUS Cellular as its third carrier partner in the United States. Additionally, Project Fi has also introduced a family plan, and just last year, a Group Repay feature.
It is quite inevitable that Google’s Project Fi would also join in on the unlimited data fun. Last year saw virtually all of the Big Four carriers in America (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint) aggressively promote their respective unlimited data offerings. Perhaps it is high time for Project Fi to also offer its own take on the concept. To know more about Project Fi, you can start by checking out our official review.
