Two organizations -- the Groupe Spéciale Mobile Association (GSMA) and the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) -- are joining forces in order to start a new industry trade event in the United States, one that will debut in 2017 in the city of San Francisco in California. Officially dubbed “GSMA Mobile World Congress Americas, in partnership with CTIA,” the event will be promoted as a mobile tech show but with a global flavor. Even though the GSMA and the CTIA are considered equal partners in giving birth to Mobile World Congress Americas, GSMA will take a more pronounced role in the areas of production and management.
Some may be familiar with the CTIA’s Super Mobility event happening yearly. Well, this event will no longer continue to give way for Mobile World Congress Americas starting next year. Still, the final Super Mobility event will still happen on September later this year in the city of Las Vegas in Nevada. Moreover, the CTIA will keep on holding other educational and policy initiatives in order to promote the mobile market in the US. And just to be clear about it, GSMA’s annual Mobile World Congress will still continue to be conducted in the city of Barcelona in Spain every year. Similarly, the organization will keep on holding the year Mobile World Congress Shanghai as well for the Chinese mobile market.
As for the new Mobile World Congress Americas, both organizations are expecting the event to draw about 1,000 participating companies and 30,000 attendees. As explained by Attwell Baker, the chief executive officer of the CTIA, the collaboration is aiming to create an event that is truly global in the US and the rest of the Americas. Specifically, the target is to continue to advocate and highlight innovation and opportunities in the world of mobile and wireless, as well as promote new technologies and concepts such as 5G and the Internet of Things. The CTIA has always leaned on the policy and educational side of things, and it will continue to focus on those areas in helping organize next year’s inaugural launch of the Mobile World Congress Americas event.
Obviously, by virtue of having existed for several years now, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is still considered the more popular event. Because of this, tech companies are always expected to unveil their latest toys during this tech show, more notably Android mobile giants such as Samsung and LG. But a few years from now, Mobile World Congress Americas may soon catch up.
