Corephotonics is an Israeli startup company that specializes in making camera modules for smartphone devices. Recently, Corephotonics has developed a new dual camera technology that may feature in most smartphones in the next months or years to come. Excited industry watchers are even saying that as early as the third quarter of this year, Corephotonics’ dual camera technology could already appear in a number of flagship devices released in the market.
Corephotonics had actually previously stated back in the 2014 Mobile World Congress that its dual camera technology could feature in mobile devices during that same year. But some tech geeks may have felt cheated that two years have passed but still no sign of the company’s camera tech in today’s smartphones. It is possible that a couple of years ago, most mobile users just did not know what to make of the technology yet. And of course, the supply chain was not ready yet, with demand still not that apparent.
2016 just might be the right time to usher in the era of dual camera smartphones. We have certainly seen the technology in recently unveiled devices, most notably the new flagship device from LG, the LG G5, and its X Cam handset, which it debuted about a week ago. And there are rumors that the new iPhone 7 that Apple will be officially announcing later this year will feature the same camera technology. And everybody knows that once Apple popularizes a particular piece of technology, the whole world is bound to join in on the fun.
The benefits of having dual camera technology on one’s smartphone are many. Basically, dual camera technology makes use of a fixed focus telephoto lens and a more standard wide angle camera. When combining the two in capturing an image, the resulting picture is miles better than just one camera. This means there is better resolution, reduced noise in low light conditions, enhanced dynamic range and depth analysis. If that sounds too technical for average users, let’s just say that two eyes are always better than one.
In a time where people are beginning to talk about iPhone fatigue and slumping smartphone sales, mobile users need to be excited about smartphones again. Dual camera technology could be that catalyst in making smartphone devices seem fresh and awesome again.
We’ve had mobile payment systems, virtual reality, and other stuff, but it is a good bet come tomorrow, it will be dual cameras that make smartphones cool again.
