The Pokemon Company has released a new Pokemon themed mobile game called Pokemon Duel, and it is made available to both Android and iOS mobile users absolutely free of charge. This should be welcome news to fans of the whole Pokemon mythology, especially those ready to move on from Pokemon Go, last year’s ridiculously successful title that had players of all ages roam neighborhoods, streets, parks, and malls in order to capture monsters with endearingly cute names.
Unlike Pokemon Go which took full advantage of augmented reality, the new Pokemon Duel is more of a normal mobile game. The overall idea is still the same -- players will have to catch new Pokemon, form squads of six critters, or take turns battling opponents -- but the game is transplanted into a board game. For a player to win a round, he will need to move his team of six monsters around a board and try to land one on another player’s goal, while simultaneously trying to prevent the opposition from doing the same. People can block an opponent’s Pokemon, which of course leads to a battle.
Like in any board game, proper execution of strategies is key to achieving victory in Pokemon Duel. Another important aspect is how a player assembles his six monster team. There is a diverse range of Pokemon creatures to choose from, and each monster has its own strengths and weaknesses. Obviously, the player who can assemble an assortment of monsters that complement each other’s abilities will likely have a better chance of winning. As users play, individual monsters can also be leveled up.
Playing one round usually takes several minutes. Users can choose to play against other users online, while a single player quest mode is also made possible. Needless to say, when one wants to compete against another player online, he will need to make use of a working web connection when playing.
Despite the fact that the Pokemon Duel is being offered as a free download to both Android and iOS mobile users, the game is still supported by in-app purchases. Need to get additional boosters? You can do so as long as you got the money to pay for them. Or if it suits you, you can just earn them through playing, albeit it may take some time.
As for those who prefer sticking to Pokemon Go, there is no harm in doing so. After all, all that walking can do some good.
