Apart from introducing its newest iPhone (the 4 inch iPhone SE) during its event held in its headquarters in the city of Cupertino in California, Apple also took the opportunity to announce iOS 9.3, the launching of the latest version of its iOS mobile operating system, at the same time highlighting the many new features that come with the software update.
Every year, Apple always makes sure to unveil a new version of its iOS platform, usually around the release of a new iPhone offering. For instance, when the company launched its current flagship devices, the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, back in September of last year, it also updated its mobile OS with the release of iOS 9.
This year, with the unveiling of the iPhone SE, Apple also had iOS 9.3 go live. This newest version continues some of the things started by iOS 9, including the ability to customize itself to the mobile user’s habits, depending on any particular time of day or on any specific location. For example, when users are about to go for a run, the iOS 9 powered device will start loading up playlists.
With iOS 9.3, some of the features are new (albeit not entirely unexpected). One of them is Night Shift mode, which has the ability to adjust the light emitted from the iOS device’s display screen into a warmer tone, helping people sleep better (especially those who always check their iPhone and iPad devices before catching some Zs).
Apparently, the blue light that comes out of LED screens lowers the production of melatonin. For those not in the know, melatonin is basically the hormone that informs our brains that we should go to bed already. But by adjusting that blue or bright white light to warmer colors, like orange, yellow or red, it can help mobile users transition to sleep better.
This is where the Night Shift feature plays a part. What it does is make use of the data provided by the iOS powered device’s clock and location, determining on its own if it is already evening, and then proceeds to automatically minimize the blue tones of the handset’s display screen. And when morning comes, the functionality resets the device back to its normal display screen colors.
Aside from the Night Shift mode, iOS 9.3 also comes with other features that include password protection for the Notes mobile app (which now has the ability to be sorted according to title or date), mobile app suggestions in Health, and more personalized and improved News.
