AT&T has just been cleared by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to roll out its Wi-Fi Calling feature on select models of Apple’s iPhones that have been updated with iOS 9, the latest version of the iOS mobile operating system. The iPhones that can be enabled with AT&T’s Wi-Fi Calling feature include the latest iPhone models (the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus) and last year’s models (the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus).
As soon as the Wi-Fi Calling feature is enabled on their iPhone devices, subscribers of the second biggest wireless carrier in the United States should be able to make and take voice calls on a Wi-Fi network, especially if they find themselves in locations wherein the cellular network is spotty or nonexistent at all.
Enabling AT&T’s Wi-Fi Calling feature on one’s iPhones is pretty quick and easy. One just needs to go through the following steps:
Step 1: Launch the settings app.
Step 2: Scroll down, and choose Phone from options listed. If you want, you can also search the Settings app for the Wi-Fi Calling feature.
Step 3: Choose Wi-Fi Calling from the top of the list.
Step 4: Turn on the Wi-Fi Calling feature by sliding its corresponding switch to the On position.
After users have followed these straightforward steps, they can expect the next few screens to require them to activate the Wi-Fi Calling feature, as well as opt in to the service. There will be warnings ahead, the most significant of which is relating to emergency services. Plus, users will be required to confirm the address where they plan to primarily use the Wi-Fi Calling feature, again for purposes of emergency. Some users may notice that the feature is not available on their mobile devices yet. Some may even see an error page, but not until they are finished with the setup process (which is rather strange).
With regards to using a Wi-Fi network to make or take voice calls, users will not have to do anything different compared to what they are accustomed to. Their iPhones enabled with the Wi-Fi Calling feature will automatically do the switching for them. This means that users just have to hit dial and their devices will evaluate whether to do it on a cellular connection or on a Wi-Fi Network, whichever is available.
