Google has made it official -- the name of the latest version of its Android mobile operating system is Android Nougat. Now that the tech giant has settled that, the next important question is: which new Nexus device will be the first to be powered by Android Nougat? According to a report by Android Police, it could be a couple of mobile devices built by HTC. The talk is that the Taiwan based mobile manufacturer will introduce a pair of Android Nougat handsets that feature similar specifications but with varying display screen sizes.
The new Nexus reportedly being developed by HTC are code named as Sailfish (for the smaller handset) and Marlin (for the larger device). Because it is sort of the trend nowadays, the Taiwan based phone maker could decide to follow the path of Apple’s flagship devices, in which two models are announced together with the other model a “Plus” option, typically sporting a bigger display screen and sometimes a much powerful battery, e.g. iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6 Plus.
Speculation abounds as to the specifications of the rumored Nexus devices from HTC. Sailfish, for instance, is said to come with a 5.5 inch AMOLED display screen, a 12 megapixel camera on the rear side and an 8 megapixel camera on the front side, a 2,770 mAh battery, and a USB C port, among many others. Sailfish is also rumored to be fitted with an undisclosed 2 GigaHertz 64 bit quad core processor, supported by 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) as well as 32 gigabytes of built in storage.
As for Marlin, the handset will reportedly be equipped with a Snapdragon 821 chip, which many expect to possess faster processing speed, and also, improved power efficiency. Other rumored specs include a QHD display screen, 4 gigabytes of RAM (in order to support Google Cardboard and virtual reality in general).
Like the Nexus 6P (manufactured by Huawei) and the Nexus 5X (built by LG), both released last year, 2017’s new Nexus devices could also come with a fingerprint scanner that is mounted on the rear side.
Talk of HTC making the next models of Nexus devices were reported as early as April this year. HTC is said to have signed a three year deal with Google in order to build the next generation of Nexus smartphones. Apart from HTC, Google has had previous collaborations with Motorola, LG, and Huawei in releasing Nexus models in the last few years.
