For those worried about the One series of smartphone devices biting the dust now that HTC has unveiled its new U lineup of handsets, rest assured that the Taiwanese phone maker has promised not to discontinue releasing One branded devices. But just to be clear about all of this -- the U series is now the new flagship devices from now on.
With the official introduction of the new U Ultra and U Play devices, HTC is making a deliberate decision to give itself a fresh start when it comes to flagship offerings. Indeed, what distinguished the U devices from the One series is dual display screen configuration as well as an integrated artificial intelligence digital assistant called the Sense Companion.
Even though HTC is deciding to go in another direction, it would be a shame not to give credit to its One series. Despite the fact that One devices never really took off with the masses, they did manage to garner some acclaim. But there is some positive news -- the lineup will still live on, HTC will just not position the brand as a flagship.
It is sometimes easy to forget that not too long ago, HTC was considered one of the most prominent brand names in mobile. Interestingly, just as the phone maker was starting to introduce its high end One devices, its branding began to be overshadowed by other players in the industry, most notably Samsung and Apple, both of which now continue to dominate the global market for smartphones. And despite the impressive specifications offered by its handsets, HTC was never really quite able to match the industry leaders.
Moving forward though, HTC is looking to position the One series as a midrange smartphone choice. Also, the Taiwan based mobile manufacturer is also planning to be more focused (rather than prolific) this year. As a matter of fact, Chialin Chang, the President of Smartphone and Connected Devices at HTC, has confirmed to Engadget that the company is expecting to launch six to seven new smartphone models in 2017.
That volume of output is significantly less than what HTC has managed last year, when it released about a dozen new handsets. But there is a big reason for this -- according to Chang, the phone maker is looking this year to put more of its attention to developing the core features of its products, in order to better compete with its rivals. In other words, it is quality over quantity for 2017.
