Huawei has just officially introduced two new flagship devices, the P9 and the P9 Plus, during an event held in the city of London in the United Kingdom. With both devices sporting display screen sizes of at least 5 inches, the latest offerings from the third biggest smartphone vendor in the world belong squarely in the phablet category, but perhaps their biggest draw are their image capturing capabilities.
Huawei’s P9 and P9 Plus devices both come with dual lenses on the rear side, both situated beside the Leica branding. Back in February early this year, there were reports that the Chinese phone maker was joining forces with the Germany based Leica for its upcoming latest flagship devices. Technically, the lenses used in the new smartphones are not exactly Leica, but were co-engineered with extensive help from the lens maker. Still, Huawei has taken full advantage of the Leica brand name.
The dual lenses on the P9 and the P9 Plus devices each have 12 megapixel sensors, and Huawei is claiming that the combination of dual but different lenses allows mobile users to take photos with better light and overall quality. Also, the Chinese mobile giant is saying that the dual lenses have support for wide aperture mode, which lets in more light, thereby resulting to better looking images.
Now on to the specifications. The P9 sports a 5.2 inch AMOLED display screen, with 1,080 pixel resolution. Inside, the device packs a HiSilicon Kirin 955 chip set, with quad core 2.5 GigaHertz Cortex A72 and 1.8 GigaHertz Cortex A53 central processing unit, with memory specifications of either 3 gigabytes RAM and 32 gigabytes internal storage, or 4 gigabytes RAM and 64 gigabytes internal storage, plus a micro SD card slot for expanding memory up to 128 gigabytes. It also features a 3,000 mAh battery, and is powered by Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
As for the P9 Plus, it comes with a bigger 5.5 inch AMOLED display screen, and just about the same specifications as its smaller sibling. The only differences are in the RAM specs (the P9 Plus has 4 gigabytes RAM), onboard memory (64 gigabytes on the P9 Plus, and battery (the bigger device features a 3,400 mAh battery).
The P9 and the P9 Plus are set to launch in Europe and Middle East in April 16th of this year, with the 32 gigabyte edition P9 priced at 599 Euros, the 64 gigabyte edition P9 at 649 Euros, and the P9 Plus at 749 Euros. Color options include Haze Gold, Rose Gold, Prestige Gold, Mystic Silver, Ceramic White, and Titanium Gray.
