As seen on a teaser poster shown on the Weibo website, Huawei is set to debut its newest smartphone offering, the Honor 7, on June 30th of this year.
As far as teasers go, the Honor 7's is pretty minimalistic. The mostly black teaser poster essentially just shows the name Honor and the number seven superimposed on a fingerprint graphic. Listed at the bottom part of the teaser poster is the date of June 30.
The number seven, of course, indicates the model number. Far more intriguing is the graphic of the fingerprint, and what it potentially signifies. This could mean that Huawei's Honor 7 smartphones could come with a fingerprint sensor.
In terms of market share, China based Huawei has been enjoying a good 2015. As a matter of fact, during the first quarter of this year, the Chinese phone maker managed to boost its smartphone market share in its home country to 11.4 percent. This is quite impressive, considering that during the same quarter one year ago, Huawei's smartphone market share in China was 7.8 percent.
Still, despite its growing smartphone market share in its home turf, Huawei is still playing catch up to another Chinese mobile manufacturer, Xiaomi. And let us not forget Apple, whose release of its two newest flagship devices, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, has propelled the company to the top of the Chinese market, considered the largest mobile market in the world right now.
It may have some catching up to do, but Huawei can never be faulted for lack of trying. The company is intent on challenging its competitors and at the same time attracting new customers by focusing on introducing premium quality smartphones to the market. Debuting a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor is certainly in line with this strategy. Moreover, it is high time that Huawei did. Apple's iPhones already have fingerprint recognition technology. And Xiaomi is also planning to incorporate this feature in its upcoming Mi 5 smartphone.
Also, Huawei will need to bring in the goods, specifications-wise. As for the soon-to-debut Honor 7 device, early reports state that the handset will be manufactured from aircraft grade metal and will possess a 5 inch display screen with 1,920 by 1,080 pixel resolution. It will also come with a 13 megapixel camera on the rear side that features autofocus and an LED flash.
The Honor 7 could launch in two different versions -- one that sports 3 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 16 gigabytes of internal memory, and another one with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of internal memory.
Interestingly, the Honor 7 device would not mark the first time that Huawei has incorporated fingerprint recognition technology in its smartphones. The Chinese phone maker actually had this feature with its Ascend Mate 7 phablet. However, putting a fingerprint sensor on the Honor 7 would signify a major upgrade from its predecessor, last year's Honor 6, which lacked the feature.
No pricing and availability details has not been published yet for the Huawei Honor 7 device.
