Huawei is following up last year’s P9 and the P9 Plus devices with the impressive P10 and the P10 Plus. Both smartphones come with a curvy design and a fingerprint scanner on the front side -- two features that differentiate this year’s offerings from the Chinese phone maker’s flagships in 2016.
Similar to last year, Huawei is betting big on dual cameras on the rear side, and it certainly helps to have Leica co-develop the camera specs. This time around, the set up consists of a 12 megapixel color sensor and a 20 megapixel monochrome sensor, both having an aperture of f/1.8 on the P10 Plus and f/2.2 on the P10. Due to the fact that the second camera can only shoot in black and white, it has the ability to capture more light information, at least when compared to other standard smartphone cameras.
Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the P10’s dual camera prowess allows it to create bokeh effects when shooting either in color or monochrome. The new P10 devices also improve upon last year’s P9 lineup by possessing a dedicated portraiture mode that takes full advantage of the two cameras to 3D map a person’s face and then soften the background elements.
The P10 devices has also added Leica’s branding to the front side camera of the P10, which comes with a wider aperture of f/1.9, twice the brightness level, and additional dynamic range. As for the front side camera, it has some nice software features, too, including the ability to change automatically to a wider angle if it sees multiple people in a selfie shot.
Huawei’s latest flagship offerings also have the distinction of being the first 4.5G smartphones, which theoretically lets them reach gigabit connection speeds on specific networks. According to the Chinese mobile manufacturer, the new modem on the P10 devices should improve data speeds (even in non-4.5G areas), and even minimize occasions of dropped calls in weak signal areas.
Huawei also made an effort to make its P10 devices available in more colors and finishes. One new finish is the golden Hyper Diamond Cut, which offers a super reflective approach, but will not scratch, slip, nor attract fingerprint marks. For those with a flexible budget, they can probably go for a glossy white ceramic glass finish. When it comes to colors, the P10 devices will be offered in graphite black, rose gold, mystic silver, and prestige gold.
