Instagram has just made changes to the limits of its images. The photo sharing app (for both the Android and iOS mobile operating systems) is adding support for images with a resolution of 1,080 pixels by 1,080 pixels. According to a spokesman of the social media platform, the new feature is slowly being deployed as of the moment, but no specific timelines has been disclosed regarding the completion of the rollout.
Owned by Facebook (who acquired it in 2012 for $1 billion), Instagram is already one of the most widely used photo sharing services around the world. As a matter of fact, estimates peg its monthly active users at around 300 million. For those who have been living in a cave for the last half decade, the Instagram mobile app lets people take pictures and share these photos to friends. For added fun, users can choose to make use of built in filters in the app to inject some artistic elements into the pictures they posted on their Instagram accounts. Despite having been only introduced in 2010, Instagram has grown extremely popular especially among the younger section of mobile users.
But for several years, Instagram has been rather reluctant to be more flexible with regards to the images that users are allowed to upload and show on their Instagram accounts. Ever since its inception, Instagram has always stuck to the image size limit of 640 pixels by 640 pixels. A few years ago, that image size limit would have sufficed because mobile devices back then were not capable yet of capturing images with such high resolution. But today’s handsets have improved dramatically, especially when it comes to picture taking, and Instagram’s image size limit of 640 pixels by 640 pixels just does not cut it anymore.
But that changes with Instagram’s latest updates to the mobile app. One major advantage of upgrading the image size limit to 1,080 pixels by 1,080 pixels is that images captured by users, especially those taken using mobile devices with high specification cameras, will not lose any resolution. This means that when users upload images, they will not lose any detail, remaining as crisp and as clear as ever.
Before Instagram’s official announcement, rumors of an upgrade in Instagram’s image size limit has been circulating a few days ago. The Verge certainly reported about it when they noticed that there were some changes to the source code of Instagram, specifically citing “1080px” in the code.
