This week during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), HTC has generated some buzz by introducing new upgrades to its Vive Pro virtual reality headset, as well as unveiling the Vive Wireless Adaptor. For good measure, the Taiwanese tech giant has also decided to announce that it has overhauled its Viveport VR and Vive Video services.
HTC is clearly desiring to explore new territory with its new and improved Vive Pro virtual reality headset. The device comes with a pair of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays that can render images in 2,880 by 1,600 pixel resolution (combined), which represents a 78 percent increase in resolution as compared to the existing Vive head mounted display (HMD).
The HTC Vive Pro’s very high resolution and fully immersive visual capabilities are complemented by built in, top quality headphones that come equipped with its own amplifier, which makes for better audio results. Plus, the HMD also offers twin microphones that feature noise cancellation abilities, as well as a couple of cameras on the front side. The company even took the time to redesign the head strap, in order to include a sizing dial that should help distribute the virtual reality headset’s weight more evenly on the user’s head.
Apart from the new and improved Vive Pro VR headset, HT also took the opportunity to officially introduce the Vive Wireless Adaptor, which takes full advantage of Intel’s WiGig tech. Because the Vive Wireless Adaptor operates in the 60 GigaHertz band, it promises a better overall performance mainly free of interference and significantly reduced latency. HTC is looking to roll out this product across the globe some time during the second half of this year.
As for those who can not get enough of virtual reality content, they might be delighted to know that the revamped Viveport VR is up to the challenge. As opposed to offering the usual two dimensional content, Viveport VR delivers fully immersive and interactive VR previews. This way, customers get to enjoy a room scale preview of an experience and even a chance to interact with VR content before they can sign up for a subscription or buy content. Viveport had already achieved a milestone when it debuted the first ever VR subscription service in the early part of 2017. Now, its growing catalog is currently offering over a thousand titles, with over 325 of them made available for subscription.
