Less than a month after the debut of Apple’s latest iPhone 7 models, Xiaomi is unveiling two new flagship devices of its own -- the Mi 5s and the Mi 5s Plus -- and just like Apple, Xiaomi is joining in on the dual camera configuration fun. The newest handsets are, of course, follow ups to the Mi 5 that the Chinese mobile giant officially announced back in February early this year.
Apart from twin camera set up, the Mi 5s and the Mi 5s Plus both come with a fingerprint reader just underneath its glass screen. According to Xiaomi, the sensor scans the user’s fingerprints by way of ultrasonic waves, which also means that even without a physical button, it can still achieve its purpose. The Chinese phone maker had actually been exploring this approach nearly a couple of years ago while readying the launch of the Mi 5. Now with the new Mi 5s models, it appears that Xiaomi has pulled it off.
Now on to the specifications. The Mi 5s sports a 5.15 inch display screen with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. With regards to hardware specs, this device features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, aided by either 3 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of built in memory or 4 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of onboard storage. As for the bigger Mi 5s Plus, it is equipped with a 5.7 inch display screen with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. Inside the phablet’s frame is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip, supported with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage space.
For sure, Xiaomi is banking on the devices’ camera specs to attract buyers, and maybe even give the latest iPhone 7 models a run for their money. The Mi 5s boasts a 13 megapixel Sony IMX 378 camera, while its bigger sibling is gifted with two of the same. As explained by Xiaomi, the dual lens approach has one lens taking pictures in color, while the other lens in black and white, in order to render more crisp looking shots with optimized detail and reduced noise.
The new flagship devices from Xiaomi will hit the Chinese mobile market this coming September 29th, with a price of about $299 for the Mi 5s and around $345 for the bigger Mi 5s Plus. Like any freshly introduced Xiaomi mobile device, no details have been released yet regarding the availability of the new Mi 5s handsets in mobile markets outside Xiaomi’s native China.
