After introducing a trio of new Xperia devices at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held more than a month ago, Sony has proceeded to officially unveiling a couple of new additions to its Xperia XZ lineup during this year’s Mobile World Congress event. This time around, the Japanese tech giant is debuting its latest flagship device offerings -- the Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact.
Let us tackle the Xperia XZ2 phablet first -- the device offers a 5.7 inch HDR screen, with a resolution of 1,080 by 2,160 pixels and a ratio of 18 to 9. This Triluminos display is paired with a whopping 19 megapixel main camera on the rear side that is capable of 4K HDR video recording, and a secondary 5 megapixel selfie shooter on the front side.
Inside, the Xperia XZ2 is armed with Qualcomm’s mighty Snapdragon 845 processor, boosted by 6 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of built in storage (expandable up to 400 gigabytes by way of micro SDXC support). Other notable features include a 3,180 mAh battery, water resistant capabilities, a fingerprint reader, and Google’s Android Oreo mobile operating system.
As for the Xperia XZ2 Compact, it comes with a 5 inch HDR display (1,080 by 2,160 pixel resolution, 18 to 9 ratio), paired with a 19 megapixel camera on the rear side and a 5 megapixel sensor on the front side. It boasts the same Snapdragon 845 chip as its bigger sibling, along with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of onboard memory (also expandable via micro SDXC support up to 400 gigabytes). It offers a 2,870 mAh battery, water proofing, and Android Oreo.
Not only did Sony unveil two new smartphones, the company also took the opportunity to announce during this year’s Mobile World Congress event that it is currently busy developing a a super low light camera for its future handsets. Similar to the Galaxy S9’s camera design, Sony is envisioning a dual lens approach for its upcoming next generation Xperia devices.
In the world of mobile, Sony ranks among those phone makers who take image capturing and video shooting technology on mobile devices seriously. Just a little more than a year ago, the company did highlight a new technology that lets handsets shoot 960 fps (frames per second) video footage. This year, Sony is clearly looking to concentrate its efforts in coming up with a smartphone camera designed to deal with ultra low light conditions.
Meanwhile, as you wait for that technology to be brought to life, you can browse devices and deals from Sony at Wirefly now.
