With the roll out of iOS 10.1, Apple has brought the Portrait mode to owners of the iPhone 7 Plus. The Portrait mode was actually already made available in beta, allowing a limited number of iPhone 7 Plus users to take images with a bokeh effect (blurred background). But with the latest update from Apple, this particular feature can now be experienced by every iPhone 7 Plus owner.
Just to be clear about it, the Portrait mode is not actually completely finished right now. When people install the iOS 10.1 update, the camera app will ask the user if he wants to try the beta. But there is no harm in trying, right? And besides, even in its incomplete state, the Portrait mode can still generate breathtaking images.
What makes it all possible is the seamless partnership between the iPhone 7 Plus’ two cameras. While the device’s main 12 megapixel camera takes a normal picture, the second wide angle camera determines the distance between the subject of the image and the objects in its background. That information is then collated into a depth map consisting of nine layers, and then rendered into a final product that displays the subject in crystal clarity, and its background (or foreground) in a dreamy, blurry effect. The result is that the images captured feel like they were shot using an SLR camera.
Of course, the Portrait mode is far from being perfect. The feature at times has a hard time distinguishing which is which in environments with lots of similar hues. The good news is that it could only get better from here.
So how do iPhone 7 Plus owners get started on updating their device? All they need to do is head to Settings, and then General and select Software Update in order to initiate the download process. It is recommended that users have at least 2 gigabytes of free space in their smartphone’s memory. And just to be safe, it is also a good idea to back up one’s iPhone by way of iCloud or one’s computer before updating.
The Portrait mode was first reported a little more than a month ago when a new beta version of iOS 10, the latest version of Apple’s iOS mobile operating system, was deployed to developers. Although at the time the new iPhone 7 models were officially introduced, Apple actually already mentioned something about the feature.
