But not by much though. As explained by Carolina Milanese who wrote the report, iOS's market share advantage over Android is just 0.1 percent for the final quarter of the year 2014.
If this turns out to be true, this would mark the first quarter that iOS has edged Android in the US in two years. The report further indicated that devices that run on iOS made up 47.7 percent of all sales during 2014's final quarter. Android devices, on the other hand, comprised 47.6 percent of all sales.
iOS's impressive showing is not at all surprising. Apple after all sold a mind-blowing 74.5 million iPhones around the globe at an average price of just under $700. Much credit goes to the introduction of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, which are selling like hotcakes, and partly due to the lasting popularity of Apple's legacy mobile devices, like the iPhone 5S for instance.
Sure, Apple's lead over Android may not be much for now, but it certainly has the momentum, at least in the American market. Still, many may point out that the iOS surge may just be a result of a very strong holiday season for Apple. After all, the holiday quarter has historically been the company's best quarter in any year. As soon as the data for the next quarter will be available, we will be able to determine once and for all if Apple is indeed overtaking Android by an increasing margin.
But what about in other parts of the world? iOS devices, especially the iPhone, is doing quite well in European and Asian markets. Kantar Worldpanel's report indicated that iOS's percentage share in Europe rose 6.2 percent year over year, while Android's share dropped by 3.8 percent. Interestingly, Italy is the only European region where Android's percentage share rose, but that may have something to do with the country being a solid pre-pay market.
As for the US -- well, the American market has been Android country for some years now. But interestingly, the iOS platform may have a bigger influence, especially on the apps development aspect. Apps do frequently have their first roll-out on the iOS platform, not on Android.
