DxO Labs is firm based in France, and specializes in optics and image processing. The company is responsible for the DxO One camera, which can plug into iPhone devices. DxO Labs is also known for conducting tests on cameras of today’s smartphones. Among many things, these tests try to evaluate factors such as color, exposure, auto focus performance, noise control, and even video stabilization. With regards to Apple’s new iPhone 6s device, DxO Labs ranked the handset in 10th place, which is as good as the photo capturing performance and overall video quality of last year’s model, the iPhone 6.
The DxOMark Mobile test gave this year’s iPhone 6s a score of 82, which is the same score that the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plusgot in last year’s series of tests. A score of 82 puts the iPhone 6s behind Sony’s Xperia Z5 (scoring 87). So which other devices are ahead of the iPhone 6s in DxO’s ranking. There is Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge, which scored 86 (ranked 2nd overall), and Google’s Nexus 6P (built by Huawei), which scored 84 (ranked 3rd overall).
Over the years, the iPhone has built a reputation for having very high quality cameras. However, DxO’s tests results this year seem to suggest that other phone makers have caught up with Apple in terms of the quality of the camera in their respective smartphones. In an increasingly mobile (and social media obsessed) world, consumers now use smartphones more than ever, and a big factor that determines which smartphone they buy is often the quality of the device’s camera.
To be clear, the iPhone 6s’ camera is not bad. As concluded by DxO Labs, the newest iPhone still managed to offer a nice balance of performance and top quality user experience. But the fact that this year’s iPhone did not surpass last year’s model in terms of camera quality may be a cause for concern, especially now that consumers are now more conscious about camera specifications.
DxO Labs also noted that despite maintaining high quality for its smartphone’s camera, Apple has not quite managed to keep noise at competitive levels. Despite the iPhone 6s improving in terms of bright light preservation, its overall score is still only at par with the 2014 iPhone 6 device. Still, it is not the end of the world for Apple’s iPhone. The bigger iPhone 6s Plus comes with optical image stabilization, which could help elevate its video score compared to the smaller iPhone 6s.
