Well, at least in terms of the volume of preorders in the first 48 hours. Apple’s storied history has shown that when releasing its flagship devices, the smaller iPhone tends to become the buyers’ favorite over the bigger Plus model. But in 2016, the reverse appears to be true. This year, the iPhone 7 Plus has clearly outpaces the iPhone 7, according to information provided by research firm Slice Intelligence.
The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus officially became available for preordering back in September 9th. As reported by Slice Intelligence through a blog post recently published this week, 55 percent of those who preordered in the first two days went for the bigger iPhone Plus. Now compare this with the last couple of years in which majority of buyers picked the smaller variant of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s models in the first 48 hours of preordering.
What the iPhone 7 Plus has achieved in terms of preorder sales may not be that much of a surprise. After all, the bigger model appears to have the more attractive features. Among the many things it offers, perhaps the most appealing attribute of the iPhone 7 Plus is its dual lens camera configuration, something which is not present in the smaller iPhone 7.
Furthermore, it is quite impressive that in the first two days, the iPhone 7 Plus has become the buyers’ favorite considering that it is the more pricey iPhone 7 offering. But it seems that consumers are willing to spend the money in order to get the device. This should be music to Apple’s ears in light of its sales woes -- earlier this year, the tech giant registered its first ever decrease in quarterly revenues in over a decade’s time.
Just a few days ago, Apple had announced that all units of its iPhone 7 Plus (all color editions) have already sold out before the official release date of the device. Needless to say, this is pretty consistent with what Slice Intelligence is reporting. Obviously, this is a good development for Apple, but not so much for some consumers, especially those who decided not to preorder the handset. By revealing that the iPhone 7 Plus has sold out, Apple is basically saying that walk in customers will likely not be able to purchase the device when they visit an Apple Store. They may still have a chance at Apple’s partners though, but they need to hurry.
