According to a blog post recently published by ZeroFOX, it had found more than 500 fake accounts throughout various social media platforms (including popular ones like Facebook, Instagram, and even YouTube) that all offer iPhone X giveaway deals, but are actually scams. Most of these spam offers are designed for one thing -- to get consumers to supply their personal data.
The iPhone X will officially hit store shelves on November 3rd, which is about three weeks from now, and no doubt a lot of Apple fans and other mobile users are itching to get their hands on the device. As for scammers, they are not hesitating to exploit all that excitement, just to acquire the customer’s personal information.
And it is not just the iPhone X being used for scams. Based on its research, ZeroFOX also discovered the iPhone 8 models are also being featured frequently in similar suspicious deals. As a matter of fact, the social media security company reveals that the iPhone 8 is featured in scam offers almost three times as often as the iPhone X.
iPhone scams are pretty much expected every year, especially during the third or fourth quarter when Apple introduces a new iPhone model. It should not be a surprise that 2017 has more scams than the usual, simply because there are three new iPhone models being released. But despite this annual tradition (so to speak), a lot of people still get baited into giving away their personal info. Of course, the scam deals are also designed to be seemingly harmless -- only asking users to join a contest just by supplying their name, email address, and even city. Thieves then make use of the info to steal user accounts later on.
Meanwhile, in other iPhone related news, South Korean news site The Bell has reported that Apple is apparently joining forces with LG in order to manufacture foldable OLED screens for future iPhone releases. These foldable iPhone models are said to be slated for manufacture three years from now.
Obviously, this piece of news is an exciting and even mind bending one for many. Apart from Apple (which was granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office for “flexible electronic devices” more than a couple of years ago), lots of other phone makers have already started experimenting with the idea of flexible smartphones (foldable or bendable). Back in January early this year, the iPhone maker’s fierce rival Samsung and another South Korean tech giant, LG, were reported to be planning to launch a foldable device in 2017. And who can forget the CPlus bendable phone that Lenovo demoed during the Tech World conference in June of last year?
