Back in April earlier this year, there were reports that HTC was going to build some of the upcoming Nexus devices slated for release later this year. Recent rumors point that the Taiwanese phone maker was planning to launch a couple of Nexus offerings -- one a 5 inch device, and another a 5.5 phablet, with both handsets codenamed as Sailfish and Marlin, respectively.
Just a few hours ago, news of a leak broke out (as reported by Android Police), detailing the specifications of the smaller smartphone, Sailfish, and it appears that this device is getting some improvements over the Nexus 5X (built by LG). The most recent Nexus devices are the aforementioned Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P (manufactured by Huawei). Sailfish is believed to be sort of the follow up to the Nexus 5X.
Now on to the leaked specifications. HTC’s Sailfish is said to be fitted with a 5 inch display screen with a resolution of 1,080 pixels. This is reportedly flanked by a 12 megapixel camera on the rear side as well as an 8 megapixel camera on the front side. As far as hardware specifications are concerned, the leak indicates that Sailfish will come with a yet to be named 2 GigaHertz 64 bit four core chip set, supported with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 32 gigabytes of onboard memory. The device is also said to feature a fingerprint scanner, a bottom firing speaker, a USB C port at the bottom with a top mounted headphone jack, and a 2,770 mAh battery, which is only slightly bigger than that of the Nexus 5X. It bears noting that the fingerprint scanner appears to be mounted on the rear side, but HTC has been known to put its fingerprint scanners underneath the display screens of its smartphones.
The leak does not offer anything that might give people a definite idea of how the device looks like. As for Marlin, a report from India Today (picked up by Pocket-Lint) says that the device will feature a Snapdragon 821 processor, which is expected to be slightly faster, at the same time offer better power efficiency. Other expected features include a QHD display screen, 4 gigabytes of RAM (to provide better support for Google Cardboard and virtual reality in general). Google should announce the new Nexus devices probably around September later this year, and Android N should launch together with these handsets.
