As promised nearly a month ago, Lenovo has officially launched its newest phablet offering, the Phab 2 Pro. For those not familiar with this device, it has the distinction of being the first smartphone out in the market to come with support for Google’s Tango augmented reality tech. The handset comes with a price of $500.
As far as specifications go, the Phab 2 Pro features a 6.4 inch Quad HD IPS display screen, flanked by a 16 megapixel camera on the rear side as well as an 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the front side. With regards to hardware specs, the device boasts a 1.8 GigaHertz four core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chip set, supported by 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of built in memory (expandable up to 256 gigabytes of storage). The phablet also comes preinstalled with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
But its most interesting selling point is probably its support for Tango. Google first announced its Tango project more than a couple of years ago. The objective of the initiative was to find a way in which a mobile device and its software can take full advantage of 3D scanning tech in order to produce maps and models of real life environments, including the objects within the vicinity. Although its applications for gaming is quite obvious, Google wanted its Tango project to be so much more, especially in providing navigation for those visually impaired. For most customers, they can make use of the Tango augmented reality tech to get an idea of indoor places even if they have not set foot inside those environments yet, or create a simulation of how their homes or offices will look like with specific furniture put in place.
Of course, this type of technology has not reached mainstream status yet. But the Phab 2 Pro should help expose the tech to consumers, even though the phablet is far from being a mainstream device itself. Naturally, the $500 price is a bit of a challenge for most people, and the 6.4 inch size can be a bit intimidating. But as the first smartphone to support Google’s Tango, other phone makers will be looking to learn from how Lenovo makes use of the 3D mapping technology. And perhaps when the time comes for these phone makers to introduce their own Tango compatible device, they will have a better idea of what works and what does not.
