As first reported by CNET, Chang Cheng, the vice president of Lenovo, has posted a teaser on Weibo. The teaser is nothing more than a pencilled but colored sketch of the Chinese tech giant’s upcoming Z5 smartphone, in all its bezel-less and notchless glory. Based on this sketch, it appears that the phone maker seems to be content with not joining in on the front side notch party (like Apple’s iPhone X, and so many other Android powered mobile devices), and is instead intent on delivering one of the truly all-display handsets in the market soon.
Right now, not much is known about Lenovo’s yet to be unveiled Z5 smartphone, but the talk is that the device will make its debut some time next month. But there is much to be excited about -- as hinted by Cheng, the device is said to be the product of no less than 18 patented technologies, as well as four technological breakthroughs.
Before the teaser sketch, Cheng had previously posted a render of the Z5, but showing only part of the device’s front side panel (check out the photo here). Apart from sharing that image, the Lenovo vice president also took the opportunity to state that the smartphone will be sporting a screen to body ratio of 95 percent.
A lot of people agree that a smartphone that comes with a true bezel-less and notchless approach to design would really look cool. But aesthetics aside, building an all-screen handset is actually easier said than done. First of all, there is the challenge of finding a spot for putting the front side camera, sensors (like the fingerprint scanner), and other hardware.
Some phone makers have solved the front side camera problem by simply adapting the notch (notably the iPhone X and the Essential Phone, two of the first smartphones to employ this tactic), while others have found a way to camouflage the notch itself behind a black bar on the display screen (like LG’s G7 ThinQ and Huawei’s P20 and P20 Pro phablets). Nobody knows yet how Lenovo plans to take care of the front side camera dilemma, but the 18 patented technologies and four technological breakthroughs mentioned earlier will no doubt have played a role in working around this tricky problem (or maybe not).
But with the rising popularity of the front notch design, perhaps the more pressing question is: will today’s consumers fall for a bezel-less smartphone? Lenovo is going to find out soon enough.
