LG has officially introduced the V10, a new smartphone that features a second screen, and the Watch Urbane Second Edition, a new wearable device that can double as a cell phone. The South Korean phone maker had sent out invitations for this unveiling event earlier in September of this year. The LG V10 phablet is the first of a new line of Android devices from LG that sports a secondary, fully independent screen inset above its primary 5.7 inch display screen. The second screen can be used to display weather, time, date, and other helpful information when the primary display screen is turned off. But if it is turned on, the secondary screen can be utilized as a sort of a launching pad for mobile apps and other shortcuts.
The second part of the year is usually replete with high profile smartphone unveilings and launches, and 2015 is certainly no exception. Just a few days ago, Google announced its two newest Nexus devices, the Nexus 5X (made by LG) and the Nexus 6P (made by Huawei). And then this past weekend was a record breaking one for Apple, whose latest iPhone models -- the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus -- officially hit store shelves and went to on to post the best selling opening weekend sales of any iPhone device.
As for LG’s V10 smartphone, it definitely faces tough competition. Based on its specifications, the handset should hold its own. Its 5.7 display screen (and secondary screen) is supported with twin 5 megapixel cameras on the front side, which are capable of capturing wide angle pictures without the mobile users ever needing to pan the smartphone from left to right or vice versa. And lest we forget, the V10 is also armed with a 16 megapixel camera on the rear side.
Hardware specs wise, the V10 device comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chip, supported with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and 64 gigabytes of onboard storage, with the memory expandable up to 2 TB via a micro SD slot. The V10 also features a 3,000 mAh battery and is powered by Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
As for the LG Watch Urbane Second Edition, it is the first Android Wear device to have cellular connectivity that will allow mobile users to make and accept phone calls from their wrists, even when their smartphones are not nearby. And what is cool is that the LG smartwatch actually looks like a classic wristwatch.
The LG Watch Urbane Second Edition comes with a 1.38 inch full circle P-OLED display, with 480 by 480 resolution and 348 pixels per inch (ppi). The wearable device also sports a 1.2 GigaHertz Snapdragon 400 processor. The trio of buttons on the right side of the LG Watch Urbane Second edition serve quick shortcuts for users in accessing the contact list, the apps list, and LG Health, the fitness tracker that the South Korean tech giant developed on its own. Plus, mobile users are also treated to 16 different watch faces, as well as health related features including heart rate monitoring, workout suggestions, and stress level tracking.
