A dozen days before this year’s Mobile World Congress kicks off (at the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain), LG has decided to announce its plans of unveiling its own smartphone artificial intelligence (AI) suite, which will be landing on its new devices slated for release later this year, including a new iteration of last year’s LG V30 flagship phablet.
The new suite of AI offerings will include Vision AI and Voice AI. First is Vision AI -- according to LG, it meticulously had its AI go through a hundred million photos in order to polish its algorithms. The result is that Vision AI will allow the LG smartphone to process an object (or scenery) automatically, and then suggest a shooting mode that is appropriate. The modes made available include portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset.
Vision AI will also help LG mobile users shop for products or items by offering smart image recognition. This will be done by having the handset’s camera do an automatic image search, and then supply shopping options or related information, like which shops offer that particular product, with the best pricing or deals.
Voice controlled digital assistants continue to attract more and more adopters this year, and it appears that LG wants in on the action, too. But the South Korean tech giant’s Voice AI is integrated with the smartphone camera, and is designed to help give users an expansive image capturing experience.
LG’s Voice AI now has support for a total of 32 voice commands (exclusive to LG mobile devices), which has grown from the 23 commands last year. Among the new additions are commands for taking panoramic, food, time lapse, slow motion, low light, and AI cam photos, as well as image search, QR code scanning, and shopping searches.
LG is no stranger to exploring the capabilities of AI. During the Consumers Electronics Show held earlier this year in the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, the South Korean mobile manufacturer had highlighted its ThinQ platform, which is designed to bring AI capabilities to home and kitchen appliances.
Of course, the competition in the world of AI is fierce this year, especially in the fields of image capturing and processing. Another South Korean tech giant, Samsung, also has its Bixby Vision offering, and who can forget last year’s Google Lens. Still, the great thing about increased levels of competition is that the technology gets to improve, which means that end users still end up being the real winners.
