Since its official introduction about two weeks ago, Android 5.0 Lollipop is reaching more smartphones by the week. In an earlier post, we outlined how the major manufacturers of Android phones are planning to roll out Lollipop updates for their respective devices, and it appears that we are getting new developments as the days go by. This time, it is LG's turn.
A post on LG's official German Facebook shows that the company will be updating its LG G3 flagship device with the latest version of the Android mobile operating system. According to the Facebook page post, the OS update will be rolled out before the end of this year. Although no specific timeframe has been announced yet, a Lollipop update for LG G3's predecessor, the LG G2, is sure to follow.
If LG manages to update its flagship devices before the year ends, it will have beaten Taiwanese phone maker HTC's schedule. HTC had promised earlier to update its HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) devices in a span of 90 days. However, it should be noted that the location and the carriers within that location play a part in determining whether updates can be rolled out sooner or later.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating system itself is yet to be officially launched. Google, however, has already announced that the newest version of its smartphone OS will be made available to consumers starting on November 3rd. It is widely expected that Android 5.0 Lollipop will make its debut on the new Nexus devices -- the Nexus 6 smartphone, the Nexus 9 tablet, and the Nexus Player media streaming device -- which will all be released on November 3rd too.
While fans of the Nexus devices are just biding their time (it is just one more week to go), LG fans will not have long to wait too if indeed the update goes underway before year's end. Those who currently own LG G3 devices will be undoubtedly be more excited than most. As holders of LG's flagship device, they will likely experience the latest Android version ahead of other LG users.
But still, so much can happen between now and the end of the year. Even if LG does get to roll out an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its handsets before year's end, we still have to consider the individual wireless carriers. After all, they still have to authorize the update before it gets greenlighted to all LG G3 phones.
