Just about everybody is expecting that LG is planning to unveil something during this year’s upcoming Mobile World Congress happening a few weeks from now in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. But nobody knew for sure just which gadget the South Korean tech giant was going to formally announce. Well, the company has made it official that it will be introducing its latest flagship device, the LG G5 smartphone, on February 21st of this year.
Before LG’s revelation today, there were already signs that an important unveiling was about to to happen. Almost a month ago, LG had already sent out a teaser invitation for a certain launch event scheduled to happen right around the time of the Mobile World Congress (February 22nd to February 25th of this year). And near the end of January, it was reported that the South Korean mobile manufacturer was planning to introduce two new flagship devices this year, with the LG G5 almost a certainty.
Interestingly, LG’s fellow South Korean phone maker and rival Samsung will also be officially unveiling its own new flagship device, the Galaxy S7 on February 21st, too. This may be a sign that LG has learned something from last year, wherein it decided to wait after the 2015 Mobile World Congress in order to introduce its latest flagship offering. By choosing the same date, LG should be in a nice position to try to counter Samsung’s announcement.
As of now, details are limited regarding the upcoming introduction of the LG G5 handset. But Android fans should be relieved to know that based on its track record, LG has always been generous in providing plenty of information about any new mobile device it is debuting. Still, there is no stopping various industry watchers and bloggers from speculating. Indeed, rumors are speculating that the G5 smartphone will feature, among many other things, a secondary display screen, a fingerprint scanner, and a dual lens camera, but this time situated on the rear side of the device. There is also talk that the new LG flagship device will feature a faster Snapdragon 820 chip set, a full metal frame design, and a modular approach that has the device’s entire bottom part made removable. If all these rumors turn out to be true, then it appears that the LG G5 smartphone is really something worth checking out, especially for Android fans who are kind of bored with the usual “mandatories” present the designs of most existing Android powered mobile devices.
