This year, LG is planning to launch a high-end smartphone that will surpass the G4, the company's upcoming flagship offering. The G4 smartphone has not been officially announced yet, but it appears that the South Korean phone maker is already working on another premium phone that will possess even better features than its flagship devices.
LG had quite a hit with its flagship G line of smartphones. The latest model is the LG G3 which was released last year and went on to become one of the most well-reviewed handsets of 2014. The South Korean company is expected to launch the G3's successor, the G4 next month in April.
But according to some reports, LG is already working on another entirely different handset -- one that will stand above any of the models in the G series. Cho Jun-ho, Head of LG's mobile devices division, stated at the recent Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain that this other high-end smartphone offering will launch during the second half of 2015.
Cho was mum about this new premium phone's specifications. But if this other handset is to trump the G3 and the G4, it will have to feature some very, very impressive specs. The G3 device already has quite a lot to offer. It sports a 5.5-inch display screen with 2560 by 1440 resolution, a 13-megapixel camera on the rear side that features laser auto focus, a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core chip set, a powerful and removable battery, and a microSD card slot.
As for the G4, nothing definite has been released yet regarding this handset's specifications. But Cho has hinted at the Mobile World Congress that the G4 will definitely be an upgrade over the G3. It will likely feature a new design, featuring a body made out of a combination of various metals, and of course, enhanced hardware and software specs that promise to improve the overall user experience. To top that, LG will have to come up with something that is mind-blowing.
Or at the very least, something that will entice smartphone consumers to give LG devices a look. The field is already crammed with competing smartphone brands. Apple and Samsung are the leaders and hug most of the limelight, especially in the last few months with the launch of Apple's new iPhones and just recently with Samsung's announcement of its latest Galaxy devices. And that's not all -- LG has to contend with Chinese phone makers, too. In the rankings of the biggest smartphone vendors, LG currently occupies fifth place behind Lenovo and Huawei, two Chinese smartphone brands that are rapidly growing and eating away at their rivals' market shares.
Obviously, LG would love to take that lone third place spot in the global smartphone sales rankings. The company certainly thinks it is doable. It has already captured its highest ever market share in the United States and Canada during the third quarter of 2014, thanks to the great reception of the G3 smartphone. With the upcoming G4 and the other high-end smartphone, LG hopes to surge up the rankings and leap over its Chinese competitors. Of course, that's so much easier said than done.
