LG has come up with a clever way to generate more consumer interest for its upcoming G4 smartphone, its newest flagship device set to launch later this month. The South Korean phone maker has announced that it will be selecting 4,000 lucky consumers across 15 markets around the world to test the LG G4 device for a number of weeks before it hits stores everywhere.
Although not unique, this latest move by LG may prove to be an effective way of marketing its latest flagship device directly to its target market. Smartphone debuts often come with lots of information about industry benchmarks and standard basic tests. But the consumers themselves often get lost in the technical jargon. By allowing them to test the device themselves, LG is giving the consumers a chance to experience the G4 handset outside of any hype or marketing campaign.
The LG G4 smartphone is scheduled to land on store shelves on April 28th. It is the successor to the LG G3 device, which managed to spur LG to its best ever quarterly sales performance during the final quarter of 2014. Not only that, the success of the LG G3 device helped the South Korean mobile manufacturer to bag its biggest ever market share in the North American region.
But this year, the competition has gotten even more fierce. Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are still flying off the shelves even as new smartphone offerings, such as Samsung's upcoming latest flagship devices -- the Galaxy S6 and its curvy sibling, the Galaxy S6 Edge -- are about to launch worldwide. LG will need all the buzz they can get for its G4 device, and having it tested by selected consumers is as good as any marketing tactic out there. After all, word of mouth can be very effective, and in the age of social media, very fast.
Having people test smartphones is nothing new. A year ago, T-Mobile even allowed people to test its iPhone 5S to consumers in order to get a feel for its network. But at that time, the iPhone 5S has already been launched for some time. In LG's case, the company is letting people test its smartphone before its scheduled launch.
What is interesting is that LG is making it fun for the testers. Participants are to be given assignments when testing the LG G4 device, with LG awarding prizes for those who successfully complete their assignments.
The testing program has already began in South Korea, and will launch in the next few days in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Turkey, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, and Japan.
