Just days after Motorola announced the Android-running Cliq, LG has followed suit, unveiling the company's first handset running Google's Android operating system.
The LG GW620 will feature a 3-inch touch screen and full slideout QWERTY keyboard. Few additional details of the GW620 were immediately available, but the device is rumored to be packing a 5-megapixel camera.
LG's announcement of its first Android-powered device comes shortly after the company announced that it will be wholeheartedly continuing its longstanding commitment to Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. In the next several weeks, LG will be introducing three new Windows Mobile smartphones, with plans to unveil a 'minimum' of 13 new smartphones running Microsoft's mobile operating system in the next 16 months.
Widely regarded as a more business-centric operating system than Google's Android at present, Windows Mobile appears to be the go-to operating system of LG's higher end smartphones, while the company appears to be positioning its first Android offering as a more entry-level smartphone.
“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”
