Yup, you read that headline right. According to mobile news leaker extraordinaire Evan Blass (reporting via Venture Beat), HMD Global, the Finnish phone maker that now manufactures next generation smartphone devices bearing the Nokia brand name, has plans to release a new handset called the Nokia 3310.
Like the original legendary model (first released more than a decade and a half ago), HMD Global’s new gen Nokia 3310 is said to be a feature phone. With a price of about $63, it will be positioned as a handset offering that should compete with other budget friendly or super basic Android devices.
There is no word yet if this new Nokia 3310 will be near invulnerable or have Snake, but if it does get released, it will probably attract those old enough to have actually owned the original model, or those who held a deeper appreciation for the endless memes inspired by the iconic handset. As for HMD Global, adapting the Nokia 3310 should be a no brainer. Apart from taking full advantage of the instantly recognizable name, the company may be praised for trying to bring back a certified classic.
In other related news, new Nokia phones are set to make an appearance at this year’s Mobile World Congress, which happens on February 27th until March 2nd, in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. According to Blass, the new Nokia 3310 will be highlighted during that event, as well as the recently launched Nokia 6 (already selling in the Chinese mobile market), the Nokia 5, and the Nokia 3.
Not much is known about the Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3, other than some rumors. It is speculated that the Nokia 5 will come with a 5.2 inch display screen with a resolution of 720p, as well as other features like a 12 megapixel camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chip, and 2 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM). As for the Nokia 3, even less is known about the device. Rumors suggest that it will support specifications typically found in other entry level handsets that run on the Android OS.
Also, there is talk that at least three of the new devices mentioned in the preceding paragraphs will be powered by Google’s Android mobile operating system. With regards to the Nokia 6, HMD Global did promise more than a month ago that it will make new announcements about the device on February 26th (a day before this year’s MWC kicks off), so until then, we will just have to wait for a few more days.
