Users of GoPros will now be allowed to stream live videos from their action cameras. This piece of news was revealed by Meerkat just recently during this year’s VidCon online video convention held at the city of Anaheim in Orange County, California.
This latest development further adds fuel to the ongoing battle between Meerkat and Periscope, the other live video streaming mobile app by Twitter. After getting released in both Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS mobile operating systems back in February early this year, Meerkat has gained some momentum, only to be halted by the release of rival Periscope during March just a month later. Things got more heated as Twitter made a move to limit Meerkat’s access to its social media platform.
But in the months since then, Meerkat busied itself by adding a number of new features to its live video streaming mobile app. These new features include support for Facebook users, mobbing (wherein videos are added to the mobile app’s syndicated feed when it reaches a certain number of views), and Cameo, which lets people hand over their video feeds to their friends for a cameo appearance.
As reported by CNBC, users of GoPro 3 will no doubt be delighted to know that the new GoPro compatibility is now made available to them. As for users of GoPro 4, the compatibility will be rolled out to them via the next app update of Meerkat.
For now, the feature will be made available through the iOS app of Meerkat. Upon connecting their GoPro cameras to the iOS mobile app, users should be able to start streaming live videos. For reference, Meerkat has conveniently posted a teaser/demo video of the new feature on their official Twitter account.
Since its inception, Meerkat has already attracted quite a number of content creators and publishers. These include Discovery, which partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts for its annual Shark Week programming, and the Country Music Association Awards, which teamed up with Mountain Dew. Other entities, such as TMZ, The Weather Channel, and the CW, among many others, have also began make use of Meerkat for promotional purposes.
There has been an ongoing lively discussion on whether live video streaming is finally on the brink of becoming the next big thing. Recent advances in wireless and mobile technology has certainly made live video streaming more accessible and easier to use for all mobile users of the world. And Meerkat and Periscope could just be the tip of the iceberg -- almost certainly, we can expect other services to join in in the years to come.
