Over the weekend, Samsung officially unveiled its latest additions to its ever impressive Galaxy S lineup of smartphone devices. Meet the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus, which feature some serious camera upgrades, Qualcomm’s super fast Snapdragon 845 chip, a headphone jack, and augmented reality emoji stickers, among many others.
Let’s go through the specifications first. The Galaxy S9 comes with a 5.8 inch edge to edge display screen with a resolution of 1,440 by 2,960 pixels, a pixel density of 570 ppi, and an 18.5 to 9 ratio. Its main camera consists of a variable aperture 12 megapixel camera (adjusting between f/1.5 and f/2.4 apertures), while its secondary camera is an 8 megapixel shooter (with f/1.7 aperture). As mentioned earlier, the flagship is equipped with a Snapdragon 845 chip set (eight cores), supported with 4 gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) and at least 64 gigabytes of built in storage (expandable up to 400 gigabytes by way of micro SD card support). Aside from the fingerprint sensor on the rear side, the device also rocks an iris scanner. It is fitted with a non-removable 3,000 mAh battery, and is powered by Google’s Android 8.0 Oreo mobile operating system.
As for Galaxy S9 Plus, it features an imposing 6.2 inch display screen (also near bezel-less, with a resolution of 1,440 by 2,960 pixels, density of 529 ppi, and ratio of 18.5 to 9). The Galaxy S9 Plus phablet finally sees Samsung join in the dual camera set up party, with twin 12 megapixel cameras (a wide angle lens, plus a telephoto lens) that provide a 2x optical zoom. The device also offers a Snapdragon 845 processor, with 6 gigabytes of RAM and at least 64 gigabytes of onboard memory (also expandable up to 400 gigabytes via micro SD card support). On top of all these, the Galaxy S9 Plus also has a fingerprint reader, an iris scanner, a 3,500 mAh battery, and Android Ore preloaded.
Much of the buzz around the new Galaxy S9 models will center around their image capturing capabilities. The dual aperture approach will certainly produce amazing results, whether on super bright conditions or in ultra low light settings. The upgrade camera specs will also allow users to shoot super slow motion videos, which can be easily turned into music vids, or shareable GIFs. The AR emoji stickers are also a nice touch, with users able to integrate their personalized AR emoji stickers in chats. The Galaxy S9 devices also offer Intelligent Scan, which marries state of the art facial recognition technology with iris scanning software in order to verify the user’s identification.
The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus can be preordered beginning on March 2nd at a starting price of $720 and $870, respectively. Both devices will officially hit store shelves on March 16th, with color options of Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray, and Lilac Purple.
