MetroPCS, T-Mobile's prepaid wireless service provider, recently announced a new mobile phone plan that offers unlimited calls, unlimited text messaging, and data for $30 a month.
By introducing this this new plan, MetroPCS is clearly making a move to get ahead of its prepaid competitors like Cricket Wireless and Boost Mobile. Furthermore, the prepaid brand is continuing to offer prepaid plans that are completely devoid of any contracts -- just the type of plans that users who do not want to commit to standard two year agreements can be interested in.
The world of prepaid wireless service can be a very competitive field, with each major wireless carrier deploying its own prepaid brand, each offering various contract-free plans. Both Cricket Wireless (owned by AT&T) and Boost Mobile (owned by Sprint) offer a range of prepaid phone plans that offer unlimited calls, unlimited text messaging, and data starting at $35 per month. But it appears that T-Mobile's MetroPCS is winning the price war with its introduction of an unlimited phone plan that only costs $30 a month.
It should be noted that MetroPCS's $30 plan already includes taxes and regulatory charges, so customers will be able to see all those additional (and unexplained) fees on their bill. But wait -- there a couple of things that customers should bear in mind.
For one, the first 1 gigabyte of data is given to customers at 4G speeds. But customers must wonder what happens if they go beyond that 1 gigabyte of data. If that happens, the customer will experience average network speeds for the rest of the billing cycle. In other words, beyond the 1 gigabyte of data, the speeds will start to drop below 4G.
Secondly, the handset that customers use should be bought directly from a MetroPCS store or from an authorized dealer. They will not be able to get one from a third party retail partner like Walmart, for instance. Also, the device must be GSM-compatible with 3G or 4G capabilities. Devices with 4G LTE, unfortunately, are not supported.
MetroPCS has revealed that this is a limited time offer only. The prepaid wireless service provider, however, has not specified any end date for the plan. But once customers sign up for this plan, the $30 per month rate is good for as long as they stick with the plan.
