One year from now, we could all bear witness to the first ever all glass body iPhone. As predicted by Ming-Chi Kuo, the noted analyst on everything Apple from KGI Securities, on an investors note, Apple may be looking to ditch its regular aluminum made smartphone casing, and instead opt for a full glass handset chassis. As explained by Kuo, Apple’s reason for switching materials for its smartphone devices is to position the iPhone as a vastly unique product compared to its competitors (especially in terms of looks), and more importantly, to inject some life into the iPhone’s slowing sales.
This may be difficult for some to accept, but the mighty Apple may be not that mighty anymore. As a matter of fact, for the first time since the company introduced iPhone devices, sales of the smartphone has flattened as of late. One of the factors contributing to the slump in sales is iPhone fatigue, or the idea that iOS mobile users are not that eager to upgrade to a new iPhone model anymore because the newer offerings just do not really offer enough new features.
But an iPhone made of glass would likely make Apple’s smartphone interesting again, not to mention make the device look cooler than ever before. iPhones have always been marketed as premium handsets, and next year’s glass iPhones would take status to another level. On the technical side, a glass iPhone would offer some advantages in terms of the quality of antenna reception and better wireless charging capabilities, as noted by Forbes.
But wait -- why use glass at all when glass easily breaks? Apple has actually used glass before, especially on the rear side covers of its iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s models. Sure, the glass used on those devices were hardly adamantium quality, but it is good to note that Apple is planning to use a more tough and stronger glass material for next year’s iPhones. And even though glass is heavier than aluminum, Apple plans to compensate by switching to AMOLED display screens from LED display screens.
For die hard Apple fans, a glass iPhone can not come soon enough, which means that 2017 may feel like an infinity away for these folks. But considering Apple’s peerless track record in keeping secrets, it might be possible that a glass iPhone will be unveiled before this year is over. Having said that, Kuo has almost always been right on the money with it comes to predicting Apple’s next move. Over enthusiastic fans will just have to pray that Kuo is wrong this time.
