Recently this week, Amazon has revealed that it is adding Motorola’s Moto G Play to its range of mobile devices being offered as a Prime Exclusive. Introduced back in May earlier this year, the Moto G Play smartphone normally comes with a full retail price of $150, but it is now made available to Prime members for just $100. The Moto G Play may not have the mind blowing specifications of other high profile smartphone releases out there, but it does come unlocked and has support for several types of 4G LTE services. The device will officially be made available on Amazon on September 15th of this year.
Basically, the Moto G Play handset will be compatible with the Big Four wireless carriers in the United States, namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Moreover, the smartphone will come with support for both CDMA as well as GSM cellular networks. For those not familiar with the device, it comes with a 5 inch HD display screen (flanked by a modest 8 megapixel camera on the rear side and a 5 megapixel camera on the front side), a four core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chip set (with 2 gigabytes of random access memory and 16 gigabytes of built in memory, a 2,800 mAh battery, and Google’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
It also bears noting that this latest development marks the third time Amazon has made a generous offer that involves a fully featured, unlocked Android powered device. The ecommerce giant had done a similar thing before especially with the fourth generation Motorola Moto G smartphone and the BLU R1 HD handset.
Those who are looking to avail of this latest offer from Amazon may do well to note that despite offering a smartphone that comes with a $50 discount, they will have to expect the usual caveats related to Prime Exclusive smartphones. Thus, Amazon will be displaying ads and offers across the Moto G Play’s lockscreen.
As for the Moto brand, having another of its devices chosen by Amazon to be a Prime Exclusive handset should help it gain more visibility in the US mobile market. Now owned by Lenovo, the Moto brand needs all the help it can get in a very busy year for smartphone releases. Apple is unveiling its newest iPhone model this week, and while Samsung may have stumbled a bit with its latest phablet offering, the Galaxy Note 7, its current flagship devices, the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy 7 Edge have been faring quite well in terms of sales.
