Motorola has announced via a post in its official blog site that the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus smartphones will be released in the United States mobile market by next month and they will be universally unlocked versions, which means that for users who purchase any of these devices, they will enjoy more flexibility instead of getting tied to a limited number of mobile service providers. The Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus will hit store shelves on July 12th of this year, at a starting price of $199 for the G4 and $249 for the G4 Plus. Interested parties can go buy the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus from Motorola’s website, or from retail partners that include Amazon, Best Buy, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, and Walmart.
As explained by Motorola in its blog post, the fourth generation Moto G devices are universally unlocked in the US, effectively allowing the handsets to work on both GSM and CDMA networks. Because the smartphones are not tied to any specific wireless carrier or mobile plan, buyers of the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus get to enjoy a wider range of options. Whether users are switching in between mobile service providers or going abroad, they can simply take any preferred SIM card and enable their plan instantly.
According to Motorola, 87 percent of owners of smartphone devices in the US have plans to buy a new handset within a couple of years, and 47 percent of them are likely to switch to another wireless carrier at one point. That latter part means almost half of Americans are potential switchers, but as pointed out by Motorola, most mobile users do not often fully grasp the meaning of “unlocked.” 68 percent of mobile users do say they are familiar with unlocked handsets, while 23 percent think it connotes mobile devices that do not need a password to pen; 20 percent think unlocked devices are too costly; and 11 percent think these phones must be hacked after they are bought. Lastly, 69 percent of smartphone owners state that they will probably purchase an unlocked device once they learned what it actually is. For all their advantages, unlocked devices are not that popular in the US mobile market. This is because for so long, the mobile retail world has been ruled by wireless carriers who often lock devices to their respective networks.
