Part of what makes Motorola’s Moto Z line of smartphones so cool are the Mods, and recently, the phone maker has decided to unveil a couple of new additions to the magnetic modules. Meet the new 3,000 mAh Mophie JuicePack, which comes with a USB Type C port for independent charging, priced at $80, and a car dock (made in collaboration with Incipio) that allows users to charge their Moto Z handsets and at the same time open mobile apps (sort of like Google’s Android Auto).
Motorola’s Mods are looking to continue expanding in terms of variety and functionality. Some may remember that a month ago, the mobile giant teamed up with IndieGoGo in collecting ideas from a group of techie enthusiasts on how to further broaden the Mods’ usability. To date, the phone maker has already received almost 380 ideas. Later this month, Motorola is even planning on conducting a public hackathon in New York City. If all goes well, Motorola fans should expect to see new Mods being introduced in the near future for Moto Z devices.
Speaking of Moto Z handsets, it appears that Motorola is also thinking of granting Tango compatibility to its newest flagship devices. As stated by Aymar de Lencquesaing, the president of Motorola Mobility, there is a strong likelihood that the Moto Z line of smartphones will soon have a Tango Mod. It bears noting that the Moto brand is now owned by Chinese tech giant Lenovo, whose phablet, the Phab 2 Pro, currently enjoys the distinction of being the first smartphone out in the market that is compatible with Google’s Tango augmented reality technology.
For those not familiar with this piece of technology, Tango basically makes full use of more than one camera in trying to map out a real life environment’s depth and motion in order to better navigate it. To be perfectly clear, the Tango’s AR tech still has plenty of room for improvement. That is only fair, considering the technology is still very new. But as more and more phone makers bring Tango compatibility to their respective mobile devices, the tech can only get better.
In the case of Motorola, a Tango Mod would definitely be a challenge. It would also be a convenient solution. Tango compatibility in Lenovo’s Phab 2 Pro is cool and all, but cramming all of that Tango tech into a device has made that device a lot bigger than what is really needed. With a Tango Mod, users are free to attach and detach the functionality as they please.
